Xylitol
Dr. Bertolini recommends the use of Xylitol to aid in fighting cavities. Xylitol is safe for everyone and is a healthy natural sweetener. Xylitol has the same sweetness as sugar (sucrose) but with 40% fewer calories and none of the negative tooth decay or insulin release effects of sugar. Because Xylitol has a low glycemic index (7), it is even safe for those with diabetes.
Xylitol is also found in foods we already eat like fruits, berries, mushrooms and lettuce. These foods only contain small amounts of Xylitol (1 cup = 1 gram). So, along with a well-balanced diet, Dr. Bertolini recommends the use of Xylitol gum, mints, mouth rinse and toothpaste.
When used regularly, at least 3 – 5 times per day, Xylitol has been shown to reduce tooth decay up 80%. It can also halt decay and decrease decay rates. This occurs when you use Xylitol after a meal. The bacteria that cause tooth decay are unable to produce acid in the presence of xylitol; thus the amount of plaque decreases.
Xylitol is one of bacteria’s natural enemies. When certain harmful bacteria enter the body, the can attach to membranes of the nose and throat. Then they begin to culture and grow, causing infection and sickness. When these bacteria are exposed to Xylitol, they lose their ability to adhere to infected membranes and are not able to grow. Unlike antibiotics, which kill the majority of bacteria and leave the resistant “super bacteria” behind, xylitol flushes harmful bacteria away.
Xylitol has proven to
1) fight and reduce the frequency of inner ear and sinus infections
2) fight and reduce plaque
3) fight cavities
4) reduces the secretion of plaque acids
5) assists the remineralization of tooth enamel
Keep Your Gums Healthy With Vitamin C
Are your gums swollen, tender, red, and irritated? These could be signs of early gum (periodontal) disease. According to a study published by the Journal of Periodontology, your diet could be part of the problem. The study found that adults who get less than the
required 60 milligrams of vitamin C each day, have a higher rate of periodontal disease. This disease is caused by food particles and bacteria left on your teeth combining to form plaque. Plaque then hardens on your teeth and becomes tartar. The bacteria in the plaque infects your gums and causes them to swell and pull away from your teeth. This action forms pockets where even more bacteria can hide and reproduce. If the infection is not treated, it will spread to the roots of your teeth and the bone in your jaw, which leads to irreversible damage and bone loss.
How does vitamin C help keep your gums healthy?
Your body needs adequate vitamin C to strengthen your bones and blood vessels, to anchor your teeth into your gums, and to form the intracellular cement your body needs for growth, tissue repair and wound healing.
Vitamin C can also strengthen weakened gum tissue and make it more resistant to penetration by disease causing bacteria. Vitamin C combined with proper brushing, flossing and dental check-ups is the best way to achieve your optimal oral health.
Foods high in vitamin C
Here are some fruits and vegetables recommended by Dr. Bertolini which are a good source of vitamin C:
Red or green peppers Strawberries
Broccoli Cantaloupe
Spinach Guavas, mangos
Red cabbage Tomatoes
Raspberries Cauliflower
Kiwi Oranges
